Cancer Sucks!

June 10, 2011

Unfortunately, the statistical analysis by the American Cancer Society show most of us know someone that has either fought or lost their battle of cancer. As you know, it’s a very difficult thing to go through for EVERYONE involved. I lost my father to cancer in 1998 and often wonder if I went into risk management as a subconscious way to help others be safe and live a life focused on health and wellness. We all know that smoking causes lung cancer and we can choose to not smoke, however skin cancer is a result of over exposure to the sun. It’s a lot harder to stay away from the sun - even for those of us that live on the northwest corner of our country. In fact, the intensity of the sun rays is actually greater in our area.

As a result of being exposed to the sun’s rays at high levels and frequency, people may develop skin cancer sometime in their life. And due in part to the fact that various detrimental effects of sun exposure occur later in life, many do not take the necessary precautions to protect themselves against the sun’s dangerous rays during their younger years.

If you are doing any of the following, you are putting yourself at high risk for developing skin cancer:

  • Not wearing sunscreen
  • Not applying sunscreen frequently enough
  • Not wearing polarized eye protection
  • Incurring frequent sunburn
  • Wearing minimal upper body clothing when working in warmer temperatures
  • Not fully comprehending the dangers of the sun

Sun Protection

Take steps to ensure that you and your loved ones are adequately protected from the sun, no matter the weather. To do so, consider keeping sunscreen around the house, in the car or in your purse. Start young so it becomes habit and normal in life, much like brushing your teeth has become.

The Importance of a Sun Protection Policy

In addition to these general safeguards, consider implementing a sun protection policy for your family, and maintain strict enforcement. Consider including the following provisions in your policy:

  • Shirts must be worn at all times.
  • In areas where an umbrella, tent or other form of sun protection is provided, this must always be used.
  • Sunglasses must always be worn to prevent eye damage.
  • Sunscreen must be applied every hour to all exposed areas of the skin.

These safeguards ensure that the upper bodies are adequately protected from the sun at all times. And these safeguards will not only protect against skin exposure to the sun, but make for a more enjoyable recreational time or vacation. Don’t become part of the sad statistical count …. Wear sunscreen!

One of those days...

Two thoughts ran through my head this morning after I closed the door to the house and looked at my husband who had a look on his face like: "I hope YOU have the keys"...

1) Thank God Jim's parents live so closely
2) Well, if they didn't we could use the Emergency Lockout Coverage offered by Allied Insurance

Apparently a Double Shot from Starbucks was not enough to kick-start my brain this morning as A) I forgot my keys and B) I am not insured with Allied (I just know of the perk because it is quite helpful for all our clients who need it)

Anyhow, Jim's parents were able to come let us into the house so that we could still get to work on-time. When I went in, I grabbed 2 sets of keys!  All is well....

But in case you would like to know the other perks Allied offers when you combine both your Home and Auto together, I thought I'd share my experience as well as the included coverage offered:
  • Emergency Lockout coverage to reimburse you for a locksmith's services when you're locked out of your auto or home
  • A single deductible when your auto, home, RV and/or boat are affected by the same event (the largest policy deductible would apply)
  • Air bag replacement to pay for replacing an air bag that deploys accidentally
  • Accidental death benefit in the amount of $10,000 in the event of your death resulting from an accident involving your auto (when you're wearing your seat belt)
  • Deductible waiver of up to $5,000 in the event of a total fire loss to your home

Each carrier is different and has perks. These are simply a few Allied offers and the ones that came to mind instantly in my moment of "DUH!!!"

If you would like to review your Insurance Portfolio in more detail, please send me an email or give me a call.

Have a great day!
