You never know when the past becomes relevant.March 25, 2010
At the time, it may be impossible to answer. As adults, we rely on hope and faith that the things we do now are important right now…even if we have no insight how in the world they will affect our future. Case in point, my interest in computers and related technology. In my second year of college I decided to change my major from Computer Science to Psychology. Even though I went a different route with my career, I never lost interest in computers. In the mid 90’s I started my own graphic design business (agency brochures, newsletters, events); in early 2000 I started designing a retail website to sell my jewelry (focused on SEO and Google PageRank); a couple years later I started writing and posting parenting education articles on my website (early blogging I think…) and sending subscribers email newsletters. Here I am in 2010, doing some of these very same things as in my role at EHL. I create graphics. I design and layout pages on our website. I study Search Engine Optimization so people can find our website (www.ehlinsurance.com). I am blogging. I design our EHL print newsletter and am helping our VP of Personal Insurance Jeff Ogard to design an electronic newsletter (that he will write). A picture I took a few years back is now the header for one of our EHL webpages: http://www.ehlinsurance.com/newsletters/index.html
Could I have envisioned this 10-15 years ago? Seriously doubtful. Do I know what I will be doing in 10-15 years? With all the technological changes coming our way…no way! This is another reason we need to make the most of RIGHT NOW. Take care, Heidi Hoke |

I seriously love my job.March 24, 2010
I do. Seriously. Love. My. Job. There are a variety of quotes that reference this idea: “Do what you love and find someone to pay you to do it”. “Do what you love, love what you do.” “Do what you love, the money will follow.” I haven’t loved all my jobs. I am 40 for goodness sake and have seen my share of less than perfect employment situations for my personality. I have certainly had jobs that were not satisfying and times where I felt (as my coworker says) ”dead inside”. For me, a certified extrovert, I love to be surrounded by awesome people; passionate, good hearts, funny, clever, encouraging. I want to be challenged by my job. I don’t want to know how to do everything. I love looking things up, discovering new technology (even if it is just new to me) and figuring out how to incorporate it into my job. I love to make a difference. My first profession was social service – parenting education; child abuse and domestic violence intervention. “Making a difference” was a given. Leaving that line of work and trying to find “value” for my social service heart in a for-profit world was a struggle at first. Soon I realized that I can make a difference in every environment I put myself into. If I do a good job, try my hardest, have a positive attitude, share my knowledge, am generous, then I am going to make a difference. “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” George Eliot(sidenote: George Eliot is really Mary Anne Evans. She used a male pen name to be taken more seriously.) Of course you don’t have to love your job, but it makes coming to work a lot easier when you do! Life is precious, make the most of it! Take care, Heidi Hoke |

New Bloggers Coming At Ya!March 19, 2010
I spent an hour this morning training our new EHL Blog Team! Check out my links on the right side of the page and you will see links to the Blogs for Jason Mayer, Jenny Foster, Jeff Ogard and Brian Edgren. I know they are all excited to start sharing information with our clients, prospects, friends, family and cyber audience. It has been a hit and miss week here at work – I was out of the office for two days with sick kids; learned that my 7 year old’s school mate at Vinland Elementary in Poulsbo, WA was found dead (so sad, I can’t even talk about it) http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2010/mar/18/body-child-washes-ashore-fox-island/, and have been battling a cold that has taken over my head and is staking claims in my chest. On the good side of life (and there are always WAY more of these than negative), I am working on wedding plans, have updated our EHL website to include our print newsletter (now available online) http://www.ehlinsurance.com/newsletters/index.html, took a webinar on Effective Landing Pages from ASM – the Association of Strategic Marketing http://www.associationofmarketing.org/ and I am looking for a new place to live…which is both stressful and fun! Hope all of you have a wonderful weekend, regardless of the weather! Take care, Heidi Hoke |
